Weedpatch Rabbitry
"To everything there is a season, a time for every purpose under heaven."
Ecclesiastes 3:1
Karen and Fresca at the farm, 2017
Fresca was my last show horse. He is 20 years old now. He visits me when his owners vacation.
My first pony purchased with "bunny money". The Weedpatch Farm cart seen above came with this darling little painted pony mare.
Heres a couple of memories of Fresca and I in the past. Above: Waiting for an early morning halter class to begin. Below: Just entering the dressage arena.
"Whats up Doc?" Why Rabbits? Seriously, Weedpatch?
Rabbits are remarkably like horses. Bone structure, digestion and yes behaviour. I have been drawn to any and all animals but the first deep fascination was rabbits and horses. I have raised many equine in the past 40 years and the same goes for the lagomorph. Originally, somewhere around the age of 10, I wanted desperatley to own my own horse. My father agreed a horse would be a good thing for me. One stipulation, I would have to come up with half the purchase price. I approached my father again. This time asking for a rabbit. I'm not 100% sure but I believe he felt he was getting a much better deal. Horse or rabbit? Well we can all see the simplicity of owning a rabbit versus a horse. I left the rabbit farm with a doe and in no time had a buck given to me. These were meat variety stock. More "Free" rabbits came my way and within one year I purchased my first pony with the monies obtained from the sale of the offspring. For many years I rode horses in local shows and competive riding events. Rabbits took a second place to my love of everything horse. Yet, I still managed to have some around. While in 4-H I raised Dutch and a few other breeds. When I married and began raising a family, I had pet rabbits.
One fall after a almost two week local fair ,(nothing at home gets done during a fair,) my husband refered to our place as a "weedpatch". Weedpatch Farm became Weedpatch Rabbitry when my daughter and I began to raise Holland Lops.
Weedpatch is a small rabbitry. I have never wintered over more than 30 breeding stock. I am dedicated to raising Hollands that meet the ARBA standard of perfection. At the same time I fall in love with every Holland I raise. They are still my pets. Understanding the process of raising Hollands has taken me some time. Much less so for my daughter Rebekah. She quickly became adept in the balance of the breed. Much of what I now understand she taught me.
My daughter and I "spoil" our buns daily. Involvd with a local 4-H group we hope to keep the excitement of rabbit raising alive and prosperous. Pet quality rabbits are sold to forever homes and told they can contact us with any question. Our hollands can be brought back to Weedpatch for any reason and we do our best to rehome the animal.
I love to share the cute and facinating behaviors my rabbit friends show me each day. Was I brainwashed into thinking the rabbit was a fascinating character all those many Saturday mornings ago when I religiously watched Bugs Bunny?
Maybe so....
